Basic Orientation
Introduction
New York City consists of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. Of these, Manhattan is by far the most famous and where the vast majority of New York's attractions are located.
Manhattan is compact and very easy to traverse. The entire area on the map below covers about 6 miles north-to-south and 2 miles west-to-east.
The city's big tourist attractions are clustered into two distinct regions: Midtown (34th St to 59th St) and Downtown (Canal St to the bottom of the island). The neighborhoods in-between (Greenwich Village, SoHo, the Lower East Side, Union Square, etc.) are less tourist-focused and prime destinations for restaurants, shops and entertainment (often with a youthful bent).

Mark, your hotel is pretty central, but not quite walkable to most places. Expect a 10-minute subway ride on average. I've added a "Distances" section below to give you a few examples.

Distances
Following are some example distances between locations on this map:
- A walk from your hotel (•) to SoHo (11) is one mile and takes 15-20 minutes.
- A taxi ride from Times Square (7) to the Statue of Liberty boarding area (12) is 3 miles and takes 10-15 minutes.
- A subway ride from Union Square (•) to Rockefeller Center (6) is 2 miles and takes 10 minutes (plus waiting).
